For Starkville Community Theatre's first show of its 2022-2023 season, we're going into the woods and we need your talent to chart the path! Auditions are coming soon, with lots of parts for all kinds of types and ages, big roles to small roles, heavy singing roles to ones that don't require solos.
SCT brings to the Playhouse stage the Tony Award-winning Stephen Sondheim classic musical nto the Woods. The story follows a Baker and his wife, who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the King's Festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the Baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a Witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse. Everyone's wish is granted, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later with disastrous results. Darkly comedic and deeply moving, the show dissects the notion of "fairytale endings" and explores what happens after "happily ever after."
This production will open SCT's new season, with 9 performances October 13 through 22, 2022. The director is Gabe Smith, with musical direction from Jordan Durham and choreography by Jonette Shurden.
Auditions will take place Tuesday and Wednesday, August 9 and 10, onstage at the Playhouse on Main, starting each night at 6 p.m.. Rehearsals will start in mid-August, the week after auditions.
To be considered for a role, anyone auditioning must be able to provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination (like a vaccine card or a photo of a card), either at the audition or by the director's request before casting is decided and announced.
Auditions will consist of cold readings from the show script and a short musical audition. (Specific scenes may be posted here closer to auditions, and a perusal copy of a script is available by request if you send an email to exec@sct-online.org.)
For your singing audition, prepare a brief musical selection (no longer than one minute) that can show off your vocals. No acapella singing - a backing track of some kind is required, to help gauge ability to maintain tempo and stay on pitch. We will not be providing an on-site accompanist, though you are welcome to bring your own live backup or accompany yourself on your own instrument. For playing your backing music track (such as a karaoke track or an instrumental from YouTube or another streaming service), we will provide a Bluetooth speaker to connect to, and electric plug-ins will be available should you want to bring along a laptop or a CD player.

Though many productions double-cast roles in the show (such as the same performer playing "Cinderella's Prince" and "Wolf"), this production will try to cast as many different people as possible in primary roles. If doubling does occur, it's likeliest in smaller roles, to help fill out the ensemble. "Granny", for instance, could double as the voice of "Giant". A lot depends on who comes to auditions.
