This story is about a poor couple that struggle to make life as good as that could. Christmas was approaching in a hurry, the next day to be exact. Della the wife had been trying to raise money to get her husband Jim something nice for Christmas. All she could get was one dollar and eighty-seven cents.

There were two possessions of the Young’s in which they both took a mighty pride. One was Jim's gold watch that had been his father's and his grandfather's. The other was Della's hair. Della and Jim where both want to give each other something nice for Christmas, even though their money was low.

Della needed some more money to put with the one dollar and eighty-seven cents she already had to get Jim a nice present. Della came across this hair goods store, and asked if the lady would buy her hair. They lady offer Della twenty dollars. Della accepted the offer without hesitation. Then Della took the twenty-one dollars and eighty-one cents and bought Jim a platinum fob chain, for his watch.
Della waited for Jim to come home to give him his gift. Jim arrived home from work as usual. But this time he had a package, the package was a gift form Della. To Della’s delight it was the set of combs she had been wanting for the longest. After all of the excitement Della give Jim his gift; the chain to go with has watch. Instead of being excited Jim slumped down in the chair because he had sold his watch to buy the combs for Della.
